All We Imagine As Light

Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light has been making waves internationally since last year, particularly after its world premiere at the main competition of the 77th Cannes Film Festival last year, where it won the Grand Prix award. It is the first film from India competing in the main competition since Swaham in 1994. But it was quite disheartening for all the cinephiles as the film did not win at the Golden Globes recently, despite getting nominations in two categories, Best Director and Best Non-English Film. Now, the filmmaker has reacted to the loss.

All We Imagine As Light didn’t win at the Golden Globe

Taking to her Instagram handle, Payal shared her first reaction to the same, taking the snub in her stride. Sharing a mirror selfie with All We Imagine As Light producers Thomas Hakim, Julien Graff, and Ranabir Das, on her Instagram Stories, she wrote, “We didn’t win anything but had so much fun.” She also gave a special shout-out to the designers who helped with her look in a jumpsuit. She thanked them for making her feel confident with their styling. The director didn’t leave with a heavy heart but only expressed thanks for that opportunity.

For such a small, intimate film, whose still available publicity images show two ordinary women staring at a rice cooker. Or a woman in a blue sari holding onto a pole on a local Mumbai train. This is a huge achievement. Although All We Imagine As Light returned empty-handed from the Golden Globe ceremony held on Sunday in California, its journey thus far must be an example of all that a story well told can achieve.
