September 6, 2024 – Today marked the highly anticipated release of Emergency, the political drama film, which presents an engrossing depiction of one of the most contentious eras in Indian history. The film, which stars and is directed by Kangana Ranaut, explores the dark days of the 1975 Indian Emergency, 21 months of severe political unrest.

About Emergency

Based on a screenplay by Ritesh Shah and a story by Ranaut, Emergency is a 2024 Indian Hindi-language biographical political drama film directed and co-produced by Ranaut. Ranaut plays Indira Gandhi, the former Indian prime minister, in the film, which is based on the Indian Emergency. Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, and Satish Kaushik all play important roles in the movie.

July 2022 marked the start of principal photography, which ran through January 2023. The film was supposed to be released on September 6, 2024, but the Central Board of Film Certification’s censorship requirements were not met, so the release date was pushed back.

A new release date for actor-politician Kangana Ranaut’s directorial debut film “Emergency” will be revealed shortly. The announcement was made on Friday.
The political period drama, which Ranaut also wrote and co-produced, was supposed to open nationwide on Friday, but the producers are still awaiting approval from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), and the case is pending. To know more, Click Here.

A Star-Studded Cast

In addition to Kangana Ranaut’s outstanding performance as Indira Gandhi, the film has an ensemble cast that includes Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, a political leader. Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw is portrayed by Milind Soman, while eminent journalist Shreyas Talpade is a prominent figure caught in the crossfire of political intrigue.

With Emergency, Ranaut—who is renowned for her devotion to method acting—also took on the role of director for the second time, demonstrating her adaptability and desire to bring complicated tales to life.

Director: Kangana Ranaut

Cast: Kangana Ranaut as Indira Gandhi Anupam, Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan Shreyas Talpade as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Ashok Chhabra as Morarji Desai, Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Vishak Nair as Sanjay Gandhi, Satish Kaushik as Jagjivan Ram etc.

A Controversial Reception

There has been some controversy surrounding the release of Emergency. Discussions about the movie’s trailer and other promotional materials sparked discussions on social media, with some applauding Ranaut’s audacious storytelling style and others criticising it for creatively altering historical facts. But Ranaut has stood by her work, saying that rather than being a documentary, the film is a “cinematic representation” of the time.

The movie has already prompted criticism. Early reviews note that while the film walks a tightrope between dramatic license and historical authenticity, they also commend the performances and the film’s gripping story.

Earlier this week, Ranaut, who plays the late Indira Gandhi, the former prime minister, accused the CBFC of delaying the certification process to postpone the film’s release.
The Shiromani Akali Dal and other Sikh organisations have accused the movie of misrepresenting the community and presenting facts incorrectly, which has sparked a controversy surrounding it.
